His work at Omi is inspired by Columbia County's ongoing epidemic of Lyme disease. "A teenage boy suddenly developed severe pains in his leg and coutd not walk. His attacks, lasting a week or more, have come and gone severai times. Just a few miles away, a 9-year-old girl woke up to find her knee swollen to twice its normal size. She spent weeks in a wheelchair. Down the street from her yet another child was stricken with painful swollen joints that left him crippled for weeks. The cases seemed unrelated. But as dozens of other cases accumulated, parents began to fear that something more than coincidence was at work. " - New York Times, July 18, 1976 |
